Company Story:
McDaniel Inc. began as Shen Valley Drywall, Inc. Four brothers - Clyde, George, Carl and Farren McDaniel started Shen Valley Drywall in 1985 and remain active in the business today as owners of McDaniel Inc. The change of name, effective January 1, 2004 honors the family name that gave birth to the company and provides an enhanced marketing appeal to our expanding geographical market.
The brothers got their start in the drywall business in the late 1970s at the request of George, who had gone to work in 1977 for Elmer Miller of Miller Drywall in Harrisonburg, VA. Elmer welcomed the brothers to his company and taught them the drywall trade.
In 1982, when Elmer quit the contracting business, the brothers formed a partnership and went into business for themselves. They started out with little more than their tools and a van, which doubled for not only transportation but an office as well. The four would often work side by side late into the night to complete a job, sometimes finishing up in the light of the vans headlights. Fiercely competitive, the brothers would often compete with each other to see who could hang the most board in a day. In fact, they would frequently be in competition on a room by room basis, or one side of the hallway against the other.
It was not all work, however, for the McDaniel brothers. They spent spare time attending classes in architectural drafting and blueprint reading at Blue Ridge Community College. This education coupled with a determination to succeed paid off in the brothers first major job - Keezle Hall at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA in 1986.

In 1985, as business was growing, the brothers decided to incorporate their partnership into Shen Valley Drywall, Inc. In a few short years, they outgrew a small warehouse facility and purchased a former new car dealership. Over the years, the building and grounds have been completely renovated. The site development and landscaping won prestigious recognition from The Conservation Fund in 2000.
Opportunities for business growth within the local area being somewhat limited, the brothers have diversified into floor covering and painting. Rounding out the compliment of trades more typically associated with drywall
acoustical ceilings and exterior insulation finish systems projects are professionally handled. Specialty work involving fiberglass columns and moldings are routinely performed. Traditional plastering and stucco work remains a strong offering. In commercial construction, McDaniel Inc. offers all the work associated with Division 9 Finishes.
Recent years have seen multi-million dollar projects completed at James Madison University and Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, both in Harrisonburg, VA. With a permanent workforce over 100 people, McDaniel Inc. is capable of annual volume in the tens of millions.
As a conclusion to a recent newspaper article, the reporter quotes a long time business associate as saying its rare to find four brothers who agree on anything, much less four who have been able to work side-by-side and prosper year-after-year for so long. When asked about the root of their success, the McDaniel brothers reply that its family and particularly their parents that helped them lay the foundation for what is truly a modern business miracle.
